Thompson Congregational Church renovating after fire in 2016

Renovation

THOMPSON, CT (WFSB)- The Thompson Congregational Church was stagnant for years because it needed costly repairs after a devastating fire.

The church earned $500,000 from an Interior Renovation Grant and state of Connecticut programs.

It previously said it needed more than $2 million.

“This project was approved due to the historic significance of the church, the importance to Thompson, and the potential for reuse of the building to support the community,” said a spokesperson for the Thompson Congregational Church.

The church was started in 1728 and has been in the current building since 1856 with decades of history attached to it.

After the fire in 2016, the church prioritized virtual worship.

Members look forward to getting back inside the building to have a better community of faith.

The highest priority of construction is closing the back wall and the roof.

Phase one of rebuilding will start between 2024 and 2025 which will take up to nine months of renovation.

Donations are still needed in order to fulfill the Thompson Congregational Church’s needs.
